(5-26-2009) Amsterdam Engine1 and Tower 4 responded to a report of a structure fire at 14 Orange St, around 8:35 pm, while in route, the officer in charge observed heavy smoke, upon approach, he called a general alarm (32 men), 14 Orange St was fully involved and the exposure to the left (12 Orange St ) was also involved, the first hydrant firefighters’ connected to could not supply the water needed for the amount of fire they had, mutual aid was called , ( 1 month ago, same situation on Mechanic St.).
Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the structures on Orange St, a broken gas line at the original structure made it more difficult along with the presence of oxygen tanks for medical use by the resident, the gas line was not extinguished until National Grid crews arrived with heavy equipment and dug for the gas line in the street only to break the water line that entered the house and filled the hole the crew just dug, Amsterdam DPW had to be called to shut the water off before National Grid could proceed with the gas line well into the next day.
Structures on Glen Ave and Willard St. (2 blocks away) also reported fires from embers landing on the roofs, those fires were extinguished with heavy damage.
Amsterdam police arrived on scene before AFD and with the help of a neighbor assisted the 78 year old female from 14 Orange St to a GAVAC ambulance that brought her to a waiting LIFE-NET helicopter that flew her to Albany Medical Center for facial burns.
The American Red Cross of Northeastern NY assisted about 55 people from the neighborhood that were temporarily displaced due to no power or water.
3 firefighters reported minor injuries.
The cause has yet to be determined.
