DRILL @ St.Johnsville High School ( Some images might be graphic )
Members of the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department organized a Mock DWI presentation for the St. Johnsville Central High School students on Thursday May 21. The event organizers Lt. Mindy Stagliano and Capt. Mayra Rodriguez wanted to make a lasting impression in the minds of the junior and senior students for this prom season. Rodriguez said "without the realism there is nothing for the students to think about. We wanted to burn impressions in their minds that they would remember for a long time to come". After months of planning a very realistic senario was presented. Crashed cars, injured students, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, a helicopter, and even a hearse responded. After the event Stagliano said " there were even parts of the senario that I had to look at twice to make sure it wasnt real and I was in on the planning". During the presentation 1 student victim was taken away in an ambulance, 1 was taken away in a medical helicopter, 1 in a hearse, and the driver was "arrested" for DWI. Rodriguez a firefighter and paramedic said " we have to do something to make the kids understand that drinking and driving has life changing consequences". Stagliano also a firefighter and paramedic said "we thought this was the best way to make that statement". "If one life is saved the months of planning was worth it".
Also participating in the event was the adminstrative, teaching, and maintainence staff of the St. Johnsville Central School. St. Johnsville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, St. Johnsville Ambulance Corp., GAVAC Ambulance Corp.,MOVAC Ambulance, LifeNet of New York, Montgomery County STOP DWI, HFM Prevention Council, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office 911 Center, Enea Family Applegate-Day Funeral Home, and many other volunteers especially Chris Dettmer of Bloomingdale Farms Bake Shop who played the "hysterical mother".
